Migraine with aura complicated by “migraine triggered seizures” and “occipital lobe infarction”: A case report
Migraine with aura is one of the major subtypes of migraine, and can be associated with ischaemic brain infarction. Use of oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) increases the risk of infarction in this type of migraine. Seizures and migraine also have a complex relationship, one element of which is migrainetriggered seizures. We report a case of bilateral occipital lobe infarction and migraine-trigge...
متن کاملOccipital activation in glyceryl trinitrate induced migraine with visual aura.
A case of migraine is presented with visual aura triggered on two separate occasions by glyceryl trinitrate (GTN). Positron emission tomography was carried out during the second triggering session. Activation in the primary visual area of the occipital cortex was demonstrated during the aura. This is the first published case of migraine aura triggered reproducibly by GTN.
متن کاملWhat triggers migraine aura?
About 15% of migraine patients suffer from migraine with aura. Most patients have visual or sensory symptoms. The assumed mechanism of aura in humans is a phenomenon called spreading cortical depression (1,2). Cortical spreading depression is characterized by a short cortical neuronal excitation followed by long-lasting depression. Both excitation and depression travel across the cortex at a sl...
متن کاملLamotrigine reduces migraine aura and migraine attacks in patients with migraine with aura.
This study examined the efficacy of lamotrigine in the prevention of migraine aura. Fifty nine patients suffering from migraine with aura received lamotrigine in a controlled three year prospective open study. Treatment response was defined as a reduction of aura frequency each month by at least 50%. Primary endpoint was reached by three quarters of the patients. Lamotrigine significantly reduc...
متن کاملUltrasound-guided greater occipital nerve block: an efficient technique in chronic refractory migraine without aura?
BACKGROUND The effectiveness of greater occipital nerve block (GONB) in patients with primary headache syndromes is controversial. Few studies have been evaluated the usefulness of GONB in patients with migraine without aura (MWOA). OBJECTIVE To compare the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided GONB using bupivacaine 0.5% and placebo on clinical improvement in patients with refractory MWOA in a ...
